News: Mr. T – Returns in graphic novel from UK publisher

What a funny coincidence that right after we posted our episode 4 in which we discuss some of our favorite cartoons, including the old Mr. T cartoon, I find this press release from Mohawk Media.

“A-TEAM” ACTION HERO BREAKS OUT INTO WORLD OF BOOKS

In anticipation of the major worldwide launch of their Mr. T graphic novel in summer 2008, British publisher Mohawk Media has announced that they are celebrating with a special Limited Advance Edition.

With a total number of only 4,000 copies, Mr. T: Limited Advance Edition is now available. It marks the return to prominence of Mr. T, the Mohawk muscleman who was voted the fourth “Greatest American” in a recent global BBC poll, muscling in front of the likes of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

‘It’s great to be the star of a graphic novel’, says Mr. T. ‘And great entertainment is always driven by great writing!’

Mr. T continues: ‘There’s my long-time fans, but there’s also a new generation because of “A-Team” reruns, my cartoon show reruns, and the renewed interest in “Rocky III” following the recent sequel. That’s humbling, and this graphic novel is my method of reaching them all. I’m so proud of all my life’s work, but to see myself in this book feels extra special.’

Author Christopher Bunting adds: ‘We’ve seen comebacks happen over and over again in the entertainment industry, whether it's John Travolta, the Spice Girls, or fictitious characters such as Indiana Jones or Rambo. Now it’s Mr. T’s time.’

Bunting continues: ‘I’m often drawn to writing “mystery” dramas, where threads weave a much larger tapestry, with the core being the human journey, in the vein of “Lost” or “Heroes”. Therefore my attention had increasingly turned to novels and scriptwriting, and away from the shrinking comic industry. This graphic novel has been the perfect vehicle. I could approach it as a novel, yet also incorporate the finest elements from comics and television.

‘And besides, when Mr. T calls you personally, wanting you to do it, you don’t dare say no!’

Editor Stuart Buckley adds: ‘This book’s star is already a household name known and loved the world over, making this possibly the world’s highest-profile graphic novel. It’s a call for celebration, hence this Limited Advance Edition.’

Buckley continues: ‘Most so-called “graphic novels” are reprints of comics, the equivalent of cobbling together a bunch of episodes of a TV show and calling it a “movie”; or works that, in their desire to be highbrow, determinedly distance themselves from their comic forefather.

‘Neither makes full use of the inherent potential in graphic novel storytelling. This book – an all-original like Mr. T himself – does.’

Mr. T, who contributes world-exclusive interviews to the graphic novel and acts as its Executive Editor, adds: ‘I’ve always strived to be a good role model to children and adults alike. I can’t think of a better way to do that than by encouraging people to read! What would I say to anyone who doesn’t read my graphic novel? “I pity the fool!” ’

Mr. T: Limited Advance Edition can be ordered direct from publisher Mohawk Media at www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/store for the exclusive price of £15.99 / $39.00 including delivery. Alternatively, from April 2008, it will be available through bookstores worldwide, including online, by quoting its 13-digit ISBN: 9780955680403.

In this trip down memory lane, Gargamel's motivations and Voltron's use of weaponry are questioned. Many a cartoon theme is sung and many cartoon characters are imitated...poorly. Lots of GREAT cartoons are discussed... and so is "Sailor Moon". All this along with some Independent Reading, a Wayback Review and a great listener submitted review too!

Wolverine and the X-Men animated series trailer!

Check out the trailer on YouTube!

This website for the production company gives a little more information about the series.

Strange that it says "French Distribution" on there though. Is the series even going to be shown in the States?

Anyway, I had no idea this was even in the works but it looks pretty sweet. The animation is great and the voice acting is really good. Plus I gotta love that Foo Fighters and Soundgarden are used in the trailer.

Here's the "About This Video" blurb from the YouTube posting with even more information:

"When an explosive event shatters the lives of the X-Men and takes away their mentor, the beaten heroes walk away from it all.

But then they're given a rare glimpse into the future, and see a world in utter ruin, ruled by giant destructive robots called the Sentinels. A world that spiraled out of control because the X-Men had given up.

So now the most legendary of all X-Men takes the lead - Wolverine! Reuniting these broken heroes, Wolverine embarks on the ultimate mission - to prevent the world's destruction.

To rescue us from ourselves. To save the future.

Wolverine and the X-Men, an all-new animated cartoon series from Marvel Comics Studios featuring classic comic book characters like Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler, Rogue, and Professor X.

Starring Steven Blum as Wolverine, the voice of Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop."

Extra Credit: The Nearly Infamous Zango #1

This time around I want to talk about a book which we only mentioned back on episode 1. The writer/artist of this book, Rob Osborne, had given me access to a PDF preview copy of the book. I am going to review the preview copy in the hope that everyone will buy it when it comes out.

The book has a $3.50 cover price and is published by Absolute Tyrant. Issue 1 is 24 pages and printed in black & white. It will be in stores some time in March 2008. For more information on the book, including a cool YouTube trailer, go to the website at www.absolutetyrant.com

The story follows Lord Alfred Zango, Jr., who is heir to his fathers empire of evil. But Alfred is bored after having defeated all his arch-enemies. Now he mostly just sits on the couch gorging on junk food and watching television. Occasionally he is riled by the media attention that other super-villains are getting.

I really enjoyed the artwork. Very nice clean lines with a cool, almost-cartoony look. The story really is a lot of fun and offered me a few belly laughs. There is no bad language to be found and what violence there is seems suitable for all-ages. Nothing more harsh than what is on a Saturday morning cartoon. Although one character does lose an eye to a rampaging cyborg gorilla. Yes, you read that right: RAMPAGING CYBORG GORILLA! What more do you need to know about this book to get you to buy it? Also a bunny rabbit meets a sad fate. But the violence and gore is very low-key.

All-in-all I have to recommend this book to anyone who likes to have a good laugh. I think about ages 8 and up can handle and enjoy this book. I give this one a B+.
